He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Helms and Nola Helms; his brothers, Paul Helms, T. C. Helms, Ollie Edward "Bud" Helms and Willie Thomas Helms; his daughter Penny Ferguson; his stepsons, Tommy Johnson and Timmy Johnson; and his grandchildren, Ashlyn Helms and Conner Moucheron.
He is survived by: his wife Charlotte Helms of Lumberton, MS; his children, Bobby Joe "Joey" Helms, Jr. of Senitobia, MS and Brandy Moucheron of Purvis, MS; his stepdaughter Carol Cooper-Johnson of Loris, SC; his sisters, Maxine Ables of Brandon, MS, Faye Tilgham of Grenada, MS and Vernell Denham of San Antonio, TX; and his parents-in-law, Dock and Christine Cagle of Purvis, MS.. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.
