He was predeceased by: his wife Jean Merle Cooley Herndon; his daughter Tracy Lynn McIlwain; his parents, Leonard Herndon and Susie Herndon; and his siblings, William Floyd Herndon, Richard Earl Herndon, Clyde Ray Herndon, Fred Eugene Herndon, Leonard Lloyd Herndon, Charles Herndon, Mary Lavene Ezell and Julia Lynell Massey.
He is survived by: his sons, Leonard Herndon and Jeff Herndon (Joy); his grandchildren, Chad McIlwain, Cory McIlwain (Fallon), Maci McIlwain, Easton Herndon and Hadley Herndon; his great grandchildren, Cohen, Coye, Case, Huck and Eva McIlwain; and his sister Ann Earlene Pierce.
