He is survived by: his wife Joyce Covington Bates; his children, Juareck Bates (Tiffany) and Lukatha Bates; his siblings, Howard Butler (Clara), Paul Allen, Bessie Martin (Joshua) and Clara Hartford (Nathaniel); his granddaughter Keitshal Alexander; and his great grandchild Rakeem Johnson, Jr.. He is also survived by seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
