He was predeceased by: his father Edward Grimes; and his siblings, Harvey Grimes, Horace Grimes and Anita Cox. He is survived by: his wife Bleandia Dixon Grimes; his children, Lucy Martin (Dew), Joseph Lee Grimes (Dustin Evans), Lauren Ruth Grimes and Chad Grimes; his stepchildren, Cheryl Vice, Jerry Darwin Cowart, II, Halisha Byrd (Brad) and Gene Dixon, Jr. (Victoria); his grandchildren, Andrew Grimes (Jordan), Alyssa Grimes (Jeremy Sibley), Stephen Lee Grimes (Katlyn Brewer), Erica Howard and Samantha Jackson; his stepgrandchildren, Jade Byrd, Brooke Byrd and Brees Byrd; his great grandchildren, Lucas, Maranda, Thomas, Leim, Dakota, Masyn and Hayden; his mother Ruth Grimes; and his siblings, Johnny Grimes (Flora) and Amy Grimes Fountain. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
