He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Thompson and Alma Thompson; and his siblings, Felix Thompson, Jimmy Joe Thompson, William "Buddy" Thompson, Shelby Thompson, Catherine Shoemaker and Laura Barnes.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Wood Thompson; his children, Julius Carter Thompson, Jr. (Wendy) of Ridgeland and Melanie Thompson Hodge (David) of Meridian; his grandsons, Alston Thompson, Graham Hodge, Marshall Hodge, Keith Thompson and Carter Thompson; and his sisters, Oleta Cooper and Peggy Huggins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Jackson or New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
