He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph V. Gillis Sr. and Alma Lee Stegall; and his siblings, Hubert Gillis and Peggy Spruill. He is survived by: his wife Bonnie Pickering; his children, Joseph Robert "Rocky" Gillis (Cindy) and Tami Trostel (Mike); his granddaughters, Kristin Mijares (Dan), Paige Long (Cory), Courtney "Alex" Gillis-Gardner (Jessica), Melanie Terrell (Tyler) and Julie Anne Pruden (Eric); his great grandchildren, Michelle Mijares, Isabella Mijares, Cole Mijares, Connor Mijares, Fitz Long, Emily Terrell, Everett Long and Julia Terrell; and his sister Jean Vanlandingham of Hazlehurst. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
