He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Thomas, Sr. and Mary Zerkle Thomas; and his great grandchild Jaxon Thomas. He is survived by: his wife Gerry Ann McGill Thomas; his children, Susan Schuh (Maury) and Herbert "Trip" Thomas, III (Barbara); his siblings, Mary Lou Tickell, Richard Earl Thomas and Ray Thomas (Brenda); his brother-in-law Harmon McGill; his grandchildren, Louis Schuh (April), Elizabeth Schuh, Hannah Walker (Tyler) and Ian Thomas (Amber); and his great grandchild Brennan Walker. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
