He was predeceased by: his parents, John T Thornton and Stella Gober Thornton; his wife Virginia Bell Smith (Jenny); and his brothers, Rupert Bailey Thornton of Decatur, AL and James Arnold Thornton (Jim) of Kosciusko, MS..
He is survived by: his son Robert Russell Thornton (Meredith) of Memphis, TN. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
