He was predeceased by: his parents, Otis Cates and Hattie Fortenberry Cates; and his siblings, Warren Cates, Howell Cates and Billie Lee.

He is survived by: his wife JoAnn Everett Cates; and his daughter Alecia Smith (Tony) of Petal, MS..
