He was predeceased by: his parents, Ira Lee and Mamie Lee Cates of Memphis; and his siblings, Sonny, Charlene of Memphis, Bobbie of Memphis and Wanda of Memphis.
He is survived by: his wife Charlene Pickle; and his children, Linda James, Cindy Wood, Patty Hellums and Bo Cates (Kristie). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
