He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlotte Howard Scates and Robert Lee Scates. He is survived by: his sons, Daniel Scates (Trinity) of Batesville, MS and Jason Scates of Harmontown; his siblings, Julia Herring (Glenn) of Senatobia, MS and Don Scates (Tiny) of Harmontown; and his grandchildren, Robbie, Canaan, Sadie Kate, Ellie-Claire and Chloie Scates.
