He was predeceased by: his parents, William Yates and Ruby Kittrell Yates; his significant other Neatie Pearl Yates; and his siblings, Sybil, Mavis, Myra, William (Tud), Fred, Hall and Harley (Chico).

He is survived by: his wife Billie Yates; his son Joseph Yates (Joy); and his grandchildren, James Yates, Justin Yates (Carrie), Matthew Yates (Mary), Amanda Bunnell (Brandon) and Madison Yates. He is also survived by his seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.
