He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Nelms and Lillian Nelms; his son Danny Nelms; his former wife Adlene Nelms; his wife Verdie Lee Parish Nelms; and his friend Bobbie Walters.

He is survived by: his sons, Stanley Nelms (Becky) and Steve Nelms (Trina); and his grandchildren, Andy Nelms (Tina), Tiffany Mitchell (Brandon), Creighton Nelms (Chassey), Tyler Nelms (Stacy) and Katie Keeton (Justin).
