He was predeceased by: his parents, Virgil C. Sanford and Rowena S. Sanford; and his siblings, William Sanford, Mary McIntire and Charlotte Comeaux.

He is survived by: his wife Beth P. Sanford; and his daughters, Julia Fortenberry (Nakia), Elizabeth Smith (Joey), Anna Tufts (Cameron) and Katie Sanford. He is also survived by twelve Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild.
