He was predeceased by: his parents, John E. Dunaway and Velma Terrell Dunaway; and his wife Charlene R. Dunaway. He is survived by: his children, Jay Dunaway (Karla), Jason Dunaway (Brittany) and Melissa Hardy (Patrick); and his grandsons, Andrew Shelby (Megan) and Brandon Shelby (Cassi). He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in James' memory may be made to St. Jude.
