Willie B. Slocum Obituary

Willie B. Slocum
January 24, 1949 - December 31, 2023

Our beloved Willie B. Slocum, 74, of Brandon, Miss., passed away on December 31, 2023.

He was born in Morton, Miss., to Lessie Mae Younger and Eddie B. Slocum and was lovingly raised by his paternal grandparents, Aaron and Hattie Rebekah Slocum.

Willie was a 1967 graduate of Bettye Mae Jack High School in Morton, Miss., after which he attended Jackson State University, then Jackson State College, from 1967 – 1971, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education. He later earned a Master’s in Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1977.

Willie married Clois Jean Denson 51 years ago on June 6, 1972, at Zion Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, and he was blessed with two daughters, Allison M. Slocum and Wakeela A. Jones.

Willie was a Christian who confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Morton, Miss., where he served as a Trustee, Sunday School Superintendent and was a Deacon in training.

A devoted educator for 30 years to students in Mississippi and Ohio, he served an enriching career with Lockland School District as a teacher in 1972 and later became principal in 1994.

Willie was a lover of music, especially enjoying jazz and the blues and cultivated an extensive record collection. During his early adulthood, he was well-known for his skills as a moonlighting disc jockey at Spinners in Cincinnati. He was also an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed football and basketball at both the professional and collegiate levels. Willie’s favorite teams were the Cincinnati Bengals, The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Jackson State Tigers.

Willie was beloved by many and had an infectious smile and laugh. He was known for his keen fashion sense and was always dapper– donning a hat and his signature tinted framed glasses. He had a meticulous knack for “the details” with a particular focus on his accessories and took pride in wearing a fresh pair of shined boots, as well as clean and classic sneakers.

He is survived by his wife, Clois Jean Denson Slocum, Brandon, Miss.; two daughters, Allison M. Slocum, Atlanta, Ga., and Wakeela A. Jones (Dexter), Dacula, Ga.; three grandchildren, Deja Jones, Kamryn Jones and Donovan Jones; sisters, Vickey Allen, Milwaukee, Wi., Karen Sanders, Milwaukee, Wi., Beverly Whiteside (Cornelious), Milwaukee, Wi., Diana Patterson, Niles, Mi., one brother Craig Patterson, Milwaukee, Wi.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who showered him with love and devotion.
