He was predeceased by: his parents, Dewitt Nelson and Ottis Nelson; and his siblings, Voniece Thames and Denver Nelson. He is survived by: his wife Irma Nelson; his children, Stephen Nelson (Kathy) and Rebecca Johnson (Jeffrey); his grandson Daniel Barnett (Bailey); and his great grandchild Lucy James Barnett. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
