He was predeceased by: his wives, Doris Hemphill Thornton and Renee Sims Thornton; his parents, Henry C. Thornton and Eula Milling Thornton; his son J. B. Sims; his grandson William Houston Garrison; his sisters, Audrey Ricks and Grace Gilmore; and his son-in-law Hansel Anthony Jones.
He is survived by: his children, Janet Sims Jones, Jennifer Sims Prosser (Sidney), Sylvia Thornton Garrison (David) and Dale Thornton (Tracey); his siblings, Frances Caffey and Kinoth Thornton (Ella Mae); and his brother-in-law George Gilmore. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
