He was predeceased by: his parents, Hastings Nelson and Celora Freeman Nelson; and his stepmother Mary Alice Nelson. He is survived by: his son Craig Nelson of Nashville, TN; his siblings, Walter Nelson (Rosa) of Texas, Josephine McMillan (Rickey) of Amory and Elaine Nelson of Tupelo; his grandchildren, Craig Nelson, Jr. of Nashville, Taurus Nelson of Nashville and Marquise Nelson of Nashville; and his close friend Daphene Standifer of Amory. He is also survived by two great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews.
