He was predeceased by: his brothers, George and Orval. He is survived by: his wife Susan Shryock (Smith); his sons, Andrew (Sally) of Ann Arbor, MI, Aaron (Susan), Matthew (Wanda), Nathan (Victoria) and Benjamin (Danielle); his sister Rhea Anne Mathews of Waynesville, MO.; and his grandchildren, Eleanor, Mac, Rebecca, Ruth, Jacob, Rachel, Joseph and Annabelle. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

In his final years, when he suffered from Parkinson's, Joe enjoyed Susan driving him on long trips to visit family and friends.

“I really loved Joe as a chaplain and then a mental health counselor. He had many nicknames for me and great kindness. I strew everywhere- he called it the "Hall sprawl". When I had a bad experience with an inmate, he waited in the hot Georgia sun, to meet my husband To use my grandson's definition, "Joe was a walking Christian." Prayers for all who will miss him.
