He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerald Vernon and Marie Vernon (Williams); his stepfather Dell Peich; his in-laws, Max and Berniece Cook; his nephew Rex Vernon; and his great grandchild Brooks Miller.
He is survived by: his spouse Rae Anne Cook; his children, Julie Hilliard of Weaubleau, Jody Vernon of Springfield and Jennifer Smith (Cory) of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Brennan Miller (Callie) of Rockwall, Tavia Brewer (Dillyon) of Marshfield, Tucker Hilliard (Makayla) of Hannibal, Mara Hilliard of Weaubleau, Eli Smith of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Stella Brewer; his siblings, Beth Taylor of Florissant, Missouri, Jerry (Martha) and John (Sharon) of Eldon, Missouri; and also, Whitney, Baylor and Brooks Miller. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Joel's memory to the Weaubleau First Baptist Church Expansion Fund.
