He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Bates and Marie Bates (Pullum); his wife Ada Bates (Cookson); his grandson Jacob Donald Bates; and his brothers, Tom Bates and Jim Bates. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.
