He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Lyman and Una Samantha Merrell; his sister Patricia Stanford; and his son Donald Merrell Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Robin Bullard Merrell; and his children, Derra Hunt of Cambria, Michael Clayton Merrell of Fresno, Heather Gillam of Hollister, Justin Merrell of Portland, Jennifer Price of LaPine, Crystal Niemela of Branson, Daniel Merrell of Kansas City and Samantha Merrell of Walnut Shade. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, and one sister.

In lieu of flowers memorials in his memory may be made to the Options Pregnancy Center, Branson, Missouri or the Alzheimers Association.
