He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Barnes and Bernice Barnes (Parks). He is survived by: his wife Dr. Kimberlee Barnes of Van Buren, Missouri; his sons, Kevin Edward Barnes (Glenn Johnson-Barnes) of Chicago and Kelly Eugene Barnes (Jennifer) of Atlanta, Georgia; his sister Rebecca Barnes of Winona, Missouri; and his grandchildren, Rocky Barnes and Sophia Barnes. He is also survived by many relatives and friends.

“I was stationed with Johnny Barnes in Waco, Texas at James Connolly AFB during 1967-68. I have many great memories of Johnny over those years. One memory in particular was our road trip in my 61 Ford Galaxie convertible to Van Buren on a 4 day pass. John introduced us to his family and we went deer hunting in the area, which I believe was out of season and we had no hunting permits. Lots of good food and beer were enjoyed by all before returning to the base. Great times!”
