He was predeceased by: his wife Jane Dunning. He is survived by: his children, James Dunning (Cynthia) and Martha Aschbacher (Todd); his grandchildren, Amy Albertson (Bobby), Timothy Dunning (Erica), Andrew Dunning (Ali), Maggie Aschbacher and John Aschbacher; and his great grandchildren, Michael, Emma, Jack, Will, Madison, Mollie, Mila, Mason, Maxwell, Brooklyn and Nora.
He was awarded a National Science Foundation grant to obtain his Master's in Earth Science from Oregon State University.
