He was predeceased by: his parents, Della Jean James (Kirkland) and Russell James; and his siblings, Wanda James McLaughlin, Russell Noel James and James Doyle James.

He is survived by: his children, Christopher James (Kathleen), Britney James (Thompson), Natalie Bodi (Jake) and Corinne Skouby (Anton); his grandchildren, Kennedy Kennedy, Cayle James, Felicity James, Jayden James, Alanna Hoover, Charlotte James, Aspen Skouby, Zane Hoover, Payton Skouby, Eden Hoover, Morgan Slagle and Paisley Skouby; his great grandchild Jesse James; and his sisters, Sonja Wood and Donieta Cunningham. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
