He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Melvin Smith Sr. and Louise Smith (Nauss); his brother Charles Smith; and his nieces, Angela and Sabrina.

He is survived by: his sons, Daniel Fort Myers (Lindsay) and Jonathan Independence (Ashley); his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Abby, Brayden, Alexandra, Nathan and Baby; and his nephews, Brian, Michael Stroud, Coulter and Wyndham Jones. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.
