He was predeceased by: his parents, Malcolm Stevens and Dora Cox Stevens; his wife Paula D. Meyer; his sister Sandy Staton; and his son-in-law Malcolm Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Jennifer R. Smith of Marshall and Michael Hirt of Miami; his grandchildren, Beckem Smith, Ava Smith, Mikaela Hirt, Mariah Hirt and Michael Hirt, II; his sister Gayle Stidam of Centralia; and his stepbrother John Nelson of Hallsville.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
