He was predeceased by: his parents, John Edgar and Martha Jane Hughes (Burdick); his son John Richard Hughes; his brother Richard Hughes (Janet Hughes); and his nephews, Rick Grant and Jason Riley.

He is survived by: his wife Carla Hayes; his son James Alan Hughes (Sarah) of Asbury; his sisters, Romona Buerge (Rusty) of Carthage, Sissy Grant (Jerry) of Scammon, KS and Linda Riley (Gordon) of Carthage; his grandchildren, Hunter Hughes (Ashely), Holden Hughes (Makayla), Mikeal Hughes, Nathan Hughes, Vanessa Hughes, Hadley Gottschalk and Preston Hamilton; his great grandchildren, Fontona Webb and Tymber Hughes; and his former wife Barbara Hughes. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
