He was predeceased by: his parents, Earnest Smith and Vera Smith; his brother Mike Smith; and his sons-in-law, Keith Carlson and Bill Losch.
He is survived by: his children, Steve, Julie and Laura; his wife Ruth Ann Smith; his daughter-in-law Diana; his grandchildren, Angela Hall (Tommy), Danny Smith (Ashley), Paul Smith (Angie), Christopher Carlson (Maddi), Garrett Carlson (Ally), Caleb Carlson (Bailey), Will Losch, Molly Ackerman (Tiberius), Luke Losch, Andrew Losch and Carly Losch; and his sister-in-law Alpha Smith. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
