He was predeceased by: his parents, Antonietta Fossati and Leone Mati; and his sister Elisabetta. He is survived by: his wife Susan Paganini; his children, Raffaela Mati Zamperini and Stefano Mati; his children-in-law, Maurilio and Francesca; his grandchildren, Guido, Chiara and Jacopo; his brother Giovanni; his nieces and nephews, Tomaso and Jacapo; his great-nephew Lorenzo; and his nephew Federico.

Eventually life and age caught up with him, and as invincible as he was, he was unable to fight off Alzheimer's.
