He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter and Erin "Pat" Hixson; and his siblings, Doug (Donna), James Hixson, Barbara Anzalone (late Gordon) and Erin Mossinghoff (late James).

He is survived by: his wife Susan; his children, Michael Stoops (late Patricia), Jeffrey Stoops (Robyn) and Tiffany Alewel (Scott); and his grandchildren, Molly Goodrich (Connor), Lexi Ericson (Zach), Andrew Stoops (Madison), Ashley Absolon, Noah Alewel, Brooke Alewel, Joseph Stoops and Ashley Alewel. He is also survived by his family and friends.
