He was loved and cherished by many people including: his children, Nancy Marie Knapp, Kevin Knapp (Melanie) and Carl Knapp (Melissa); and his grandchildren, Connor, Cameron, Mary Elizabeth, Evan and Michael Dear.

In 2008 he suffered a stroke which caused him to develop Parkinson's in 2011.
