She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Melvin Erich and Vera Verlene Karsten (VanDeventer); her husband James William "JB" Smith; her stepson Darren of Wamego, Kansas; and her siblings, Larry Karsten (Jacque) of Nevada, Missouri and Vicki Yates (Ridge) of Mound City.

“Karstens and Mr. Smith: I am a classmate of Carol's and have lots of good memories. She and I sat across the aisle from each other in 6th grade, played basketball together all through high school. She was good. I was barely fair, but I liked the game and the exercise was good for me. Carol was friendly to everyone and enjoyed life, jokes, and hard work. I am sorry you have lost her. Wish I had seen her more since graduating. Sincerely, Barbara Todd Reish”
