He was predeceased by: his parents, Wayland Spencer Sumpter and Cora Mae Sumpter (Coliver); his wife Marguerite Sumpter; his son Ricky Sumpter; and his siblings, Elnora Duncan, Billy, Gerald, Gary, Wayland Jr. and Adrian Sumpter.
He is survived by: his sons, Russell Sumpter Jr. (Julie), Carl Sumpter (Elvia) and Timmy Sumpter; and his brothers, Vernon Sumpter and Jackie Sumpter (Ruth). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.
