He was predeceased by: his parents, Ruben Varela Sr. and Josefa Hernandez Varela; and his son Guadalupe Robert Luna. He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Canfield Gossett; his children, Richard Luna of Germany, Stephanie Newberg of Marshall and Stuart Gossett of Marshall; his grandchildren, Blake Newberg, Piper Newberg, Haley Gossett and Randi Gossett; his siblings, Soccorro Hernandez of Arizona, Jose G. Hernandez of Los Angeles, CA, Gabriel R. Varela of Chicago, IL, Dora Esparza of Los Angeles, Ishmael H. Varela of Salton Sea, CA, Artemio Varela of Mesa, AZ, Osbaldo Varela of New Mexico, Maria Varela of Los Angeles, Josefina Varela Mershon of Santee, CA, Horacio H. Varela of Riverside, CA, Bernardo H. Varela of Redding, CA and Rene Varela of Winchester, CA; and his close friend Maya. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog.
