He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter William Sr. and Louise Smith (Wescott); his brother Paul Elliott Smith; and his brother-in-law James Otis Swallow. He is survived by: his wife Emma Lena Smith; his daughter Tamara "Tammy" Pike (Dale) of Bettendorf, IA; his granddaughters, Sophia Pike and Katelynn; his brothers, Curtis Allen Smith (Sandye) of Marshall, TX and Olan Leroy Smith of Columbia, MO; and his sister-in-law Joyce Swallow of Columbia, MO. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
