He was predeceased by: his parents, Hubert Nilges and Sophia Nilges (Kremer); his wife Mary Louise Brand; his siblings, Gustave, Adolph Nilges and Helen Kloeppel; his grandson Taylor Pointer; his great grandchild Jovie Ann Maasen; and his grandson-in-law Dustin Mullins.

He is survived by: his children, Virgil Nilges of Loose Creek, Phyllis Prenger (Tom) of Linn, Marlene Stiefermann (Warren) of Jefferson City and Carolyn Pointer (Tim) of Linn; and his grandchildren, Kyle Prenger (Jayme) of Boonville, Keith Prenger (Janet) of Taos, Kale (Carrie), Colby Nilges (Mandy) of Linn, Lindsey Mullins (Greg Bestgen) of California, Michelle Mosley (Justin) of Linn, Christa Warren (Andy) of Linn, Dustin Maasen (Alycia) of Linn and Matthew Pointer (Brittany) of Linn. He is also survived by 20 great grandchildren.
