He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Helms and Alma Helms (Boren); and his siblings, Jack Helms, Bill Helms, Lillie May, Pearl and Ruby.

He is survived by: his children, Glenn Helms, Don Helms Jr., Curtis Helms, Barry Green, Lola Beth May, Elizabeth Moorhman, Sheila Carr, Cindy Mueller, Christal Van Dorn and Amy Mengarelli. He is also survived by twenty four grandchildren, thirty eight great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.
