He was predeceased by: his parents, Melburn Short and Mary Theresa Short (Tissieres). He is survived by: his wife Sandra Gillespie; his children, Randall Short of Kansas City, Jeffrey Short (Cindy) of Lexington and Susan Short (Darin Emery) of Dover; his grandchildren, Blake Short, Sarah Nuelle and Heather Ray; and his great grandchildren, Nash and Behren Nuelle.
