He was predeceased by: his parents, Everett Ray Shafer and Mary Abby Criger Shafer; his children, David Ray Shafer, Jr. and Susan Kay Shafer; his brothers, John and William; and his daughter-in-law Erin E. Shafer (Aaron Shafer).
He is survived by: his spouse Shelva Jean Shafer; his sister Ruth Ann Paugh; and his sons, Roger W. Wilson, Shannon of Lawson, Aaron K. Shafer of Lawson and Mark D. Shafer of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
