He is survived by: his parents, Joseph C. Cates and Lula Rachel Cates (Boydston); his brother Gene Cates; his children, Doris E. Farage (Cates), Donald W. Cates, Eddie L. Cates and Jody A. Cates-Collins; and his grandsons, Chet, Chris, Stephen, Daniel, Nathan Farage and Tyler Cates.
