He was predeceased by: his parents, Oliver Kenneth and Sarah Marie Zerkel; his wife Beverly C. Zerkel; his sons, Brian Zerkel and Kenneth Zerkel; and his siblings, Gene Zerkel, Kate Sauers, Jerry Zerkel and Sheryl Martin.
He is survived by: his grandchildren, Kay, Kimberly, Kacey (Shawn), Oliver, Landon, James III, Samuel and Katy; his great grandchild Evelyn James; his sons, Russ Zerkel (Susan), James, Jr. (Debbie), Brad (Donell) and Paul (Julie); and his brother Ron Zerkel (Sharon).
He served on the MSSU Foundation Board and committee to build the baseball facility.
