Sandra Lee Owens Obituary
73, of Jefferson City passed away peacefully Monday, May 16, 2022 at her home surrounded by family. She was born July 15, 1948 in Alton, IL., a daughter of Frank W. Owens and Audrey A. "Van Scriver" Huddleson. She was united in marriage on July 5, 1995 to Mary Cunningham who survives at their home.
Sandy held a Masters Degree in social work from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey and proudly completed undergraduate work at University of Missouri Rolla.
She was employed as a caseworker for New Jersey Social Services early in her career. She later retired from Missouri Dept. of Economic Development after many years. Sandy was committed to the care of those living with HIV/AIDS taking a leading role in founding the organization; Mid Missouri Aids Project. She was most proud of spearheading the swimming marathon to raise money for this organization.
Sandy had multiple interests throughout her life. In college she was an a spelunker and even aided with the rescue of people from caves. In her years of caving, she also liked to camp and canoe. Over the years, Sandy was an avid cyclist and swimmer. She participated in several triathlons and the Missouri Show-Me Games. All of her life Sandy cared for nature and had a special love for birds.
Sandy is survived by her loving spouse: Mary; her mother: Audrey A. Huddleson of Jefferson City; one sister: Patricia A. Owens of Jefferson City; and numerous in-laws and friends. She was preceded in death by her late father, Frank W. Owens.
