He was predeceased by: his brother Johnny Lee Kates Jr.; and his grandparents, William Kates, Dorothy Kates, Claude Strutton, Lora Strutton, Alvin and Margaret Cain.
He is survived by: his parents, Johnny Kates and Barbara Kates; his wife Karina Kates; his children, Beckett Kates and Nova Kates; his siblings, Jacob Kates (Ashley Kates) and Lori Babers (Nate Babers); and his nephews, Trey Kates, Mason Kates, Jonathan Babers, Zachary Babers and Elijah Babers.
