He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert A. Coen and Margaret Coen (Mizell); his close friend Cheri Barnard; and his siblings, Robert Allen Coen, Ralph Coen, Annabelle Coen, Virginia "Jenny" Karas, Mary Jackson and Teresa Coen.
He is survived by: his daughter Dana Barnard (James Powell, III) of Independence; his grandchildren, Syvanna Powell (Silly Girl) and James A. Powell I (Knucklehead) of Independence; and his siblings, Mike Coen of Napoleon, Leonard Coen of Higginsville and Trudy Penny of Lexington. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
