He was predeceased by: his parents, Audie Wheeler and Lita Wheeler (Lusk); his brother R. L. Wheeler; his wives, Darlene Wheeler and Betty Wheeler; his daughter Melissa Gregory; and his granddaughter Amanda Wheeler.
He is survived by: his children, Deanna Kirkland of Branson, Linda Joyce of Aurora, Missouri, Michael Gordon of San Antonio and Kevin Wheeler of Highlandville, Missouri. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a homeless veteran shelter or veteran's home in his name.
