He was predeceased by: his brother Richard Hayes; and his parents, Carl Hayes and Mildred Albright Hayes. He is survived by: his wife Vivian; his children, Theresa Merrell (Brent), Mary Cope (Steve) and Richard Hayes; his grandchildren, Spencer Cope (Kelsey), Chad Cope and Haley Cope; his great grandchildren, Eliot and Maxwell Cope; and his sisters, Donna Doyle, Carol Scott and Judy Perry (Leon). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
