He was predeceased by: his parents, Glen Carpenter and Viola Louise Carpenter (Hapes); his wife Norma Kuhlman; and his sister Virginia Crosby. He is survived by: his children, Roy Lee Carpenter of Laredo, Richard Carpenter (Delores) of Chillicothe, Missouri, Judy Gaffney (Dennis) of Wright City and Joy Frizzell of Chillicothe, Missouri; and his siblings, Charles E. Carpenter of Napa, Glen Carpenter, Jr. of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Marie Carpenter of San Francisco, Kitty Jo Young of Milan and Mary Chambers of Columbia, Missouri. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren.
