He is survived by: his wife Delma Gunnels of Jackson; his children, Brian Gunnels (Tabatha) of Conway, Jeff Gunnels (Schree) of Puxico, Missouri and Amy Gunnels of Jackson; his granddaughter Megan Stillwell (Nick) of Memphis, Tennessee; and his children, Jared Gunnels, Jessica Gunnels of Conway, Ty Gunnels of Altamonte Springs, Florida, Evan Stephens, Allie Stephens of Jackson, Hanna Wilson of Puxico and Noah Gunnels of Newport, Tennessee..

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 4th 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the McCombs Funeral Home & Cremation Center (640 W Independence St, Jackson, MO 63755). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 4th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. His pastorates started in California and spanned across several states, concluding in Jackson, Missouri, where he maintained a successful ministry at the Cape County Jail until 2020, when Covid struck the U. S. Vern resided at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau since June 2024.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to Connection Point Church or the Missouri Veterans Home Foundation.
